Almost everyone who owns a laptop has spent countless hours cuddled up in bed browsing the internet and chatting with friends and family. It is a guilty pleasure that most enjoy. But did you know it could harm your computer and actually be dangerous?
While most of you are shouting “no way”, unfortunately it is true. Generally when you are all snuggled up in your bed with your sheets and blankets, your laptop is being placed on top of the surface of the sheets/blankets and balanced on your legs underneath. The problem is most cooling systems in laptops are located underneath the laptop. This means you are actually preventing air from circulating into your computer which allows it to cool down.
While most laptop users actually begin feeling the heat on their legs through the fabric causing them to switch positions, there are some who leave their laptop running and sitting on the bed for hours at a time. Have you ever done this? Did you feel how hot the blankets were underneath the laptop?
This is where the danger comes into the situation. Let’s say one morning you are using your laptop in bed and you get up and set it on your bed running. You go on with your day, leave the house, run errands, go to work, pick up the kids from school and go directly to their soccer game. You arrive home only to find a fire truck sitting outside of your home due to a fire alarm going off in your house.
This scary scenario is a reality for laptop owners. It happens more frequently than you think. Remember that fully charged laptops often last up to at least eight hours.
To prevent this from happening, avoid leaving your laptop unattended for hours. Or, simply place it on a flat surface such as a desk or table. If you have a bad habit of leaving your laptop running, set up timing so that it automatically shuts off after a certain amount of time without activity. You can still enjoy your time relaxing in bed with your laptop, but it is recommended that you invest in a laptop table for your bed. Stay safe and always make sure your laptop has access to proper ventilation.
