A good friend of mine once told me, “Don’t ever forget, DNS is King”. He is so right.
When installing a workstation to Server, the correct way to do it is by attaching the workstation to the domain controller. If you skip that, you will miss some of the resources that the Server can do like virus monitoring, deploying new installs, etc. Here is a simple way to do it.
Some minor house keeping first. Go to your network adapter settings and make sure that your Default Gateway is your ISP’s router. If you make the server the default gateway, if your server is down your workstations will not be able to surf. The next step is crucial, make sure all the workstations share the same DNS1 which should be the servers IP address. DNS2 should be your default gateway (Your ISP router). This will assure constant connectivity to your data drives and an internet connection.
Once the above is done, right click properties on my computer is first. Once there, find the place where you can change the name of the computer, Click change, and spell out the domain of the server you are dealing with. (XP, Vista, 7, 8 and which ever version is next are very similar, but not the same) It is not necessary to put the .local at the end of the domain. You will have to put the user name and password when prompted.
That’s it. Simple enough…
